This book is very short, at just over 3,000 words. According to iTunes, the print length is 14 pages. But with eBooks, print length should be irrelevant, right? I guess not. Personally, I pay no attention to print length but I see it listed in descriptions at iTunes and in reviews at Barnes & Noble. Amazon is also starting to add this to their product descriptions, although it's not consistent throughout the store. Anyway, in case it helps, this book has an "approximate" print length of 14 pages. That's why I offer it for free at the retailers that allow it.

If you've followed my blog, you've probably already read this story. I wrote it over a year ago and it was originally intended to be the first in a series about this character, Ashley McKellan. She refers to several people (or rather, fantasies) in this book and I plan to explore most of them. Especially with her friend, Lisa. I unpublished the story because I just didn't have time to follow up on any of my Ashley stories.

However, Ashley is also the first cousin of Susie, a character by another pen name of mine. And, unless things change in final edits, Ashley's making an appearance in Part 7 of that series.

It's my goal to make this book free at Amazon , but that could take some time. Hopefully it will be free at Barnes & Noble in the next few weeks. Then I'll work on doing the same at Amazon. This is the first time I've had it published at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

My book, The Best Roommate, was free at Amazon for a few days. It shot straight up to #1 in "free erotica" and stayed in the top 20 of free Kindle books overall. And then, suddenly, it went back to $0.99 again.

Just so you know, I had nothing to do with this. Amazon is in control of such things. I thought it probably went free because it's been free at Barnes & Noble for a while, and Amazon likes to match competitors' prices.

So... in case you were wondering....

My Next Work

I'm really itching to get some new work out there. Why's it so hard? It's not for lack of ideas. It's too many ideas. Grr...

My stories always seem to go back to spanking. Even if it's not a "spanking story," I end up making it a spanking story. Should I try to contain spanking within one book? Should do a full-on BDSM book? I don't know. I don't want to alienate people who don't like spanking. But when I let my mind have control, it tends to steer itself in a certain direction.

I also have an idea for a menage book. I've never written one of those and I'd like to try.

Do you have any suggestions for me? What are you into? Do you have ideas for me? A follow-up to Ellie and Joanna from The Best Roommate, perhaps??

How much is too much?

I write when I’m inspired. The words just flow out of me, like there’s a movie going on inside my head and all I’m doing is describing it as it happens.

But if that were actually the case, I’d probably do a lot more ‘showing’ than ‘telling.’ I know I’m guilty of breaking this cardinal writing rule, but honestly, it’s okay with me. I appreciate some ‘telling’ once in a while and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Sometimes, ‘showing’ causes a reader, such as me, to have to think too much. And, quite frankly, I’m lazy. I like it when an author just tells me what they want me to know sometimes. But that’s another subject.

My real reason for this blog post is that I just wanted to address some things in my little “Ashley” book. Like, why would I mention Narcotics Anonymous? Or online dating? Or a software forum? It’s just a short, sweet story I was inspired to write one afternoon in a span of a couple of hours. Why go to the trouble of throwing such obscure spices like these into my stew?

Because all I can do is draw upon my own experiences. Isn’t that what we all do?

I thought I was abnormal until I got one of Holly Lisle’s emails recently (if you’re a writer – aspiring, Indie, or otherwise – get on her list) which said something to the effect of:

"The only way to not inject yourself in your writing is to just stop writing."

It made me feel a lot better.

When I look back over the Ashley book, I wonder if I should take out the Narcotics Anonymous thing at the beginning. Will someone think I’m making light of drug addiction? Why put something so heavy in this type of story?

The answer? Because this really happened to me. The part I didn’t mention in the story was that I’m a recovering addict myself and I actually went on that date.

Hi. I’m Samantha and I’m an addict.

...to which the room swiftly replies “Hi Samantha!”

If you’ve never been to an NA or an AA meeting, you may have no idea what I’m talking about.

I hadn’t been to an NA meeting since 2001 until a few years ago when I was doing the online dating thing. And it was my first date with the guy, not my second date (like Ashley). He wanted to meet me but he was doing the whole “90 meetings in 90 days” thing and he desperately needed to go to a meeting that night. So I went with him because I’d been to many in the past already. I didn’t realize how weird it was until later.

Also, most drug counselors will tell you to stay out of romantic relationships until you’ve been clean and sober (in recovery) for at least one or two years. I shouldn’t have led him on. He needed to work on himself.

So, that was based on a true story and that’s why I wrote it.

Online dating – yes, this happened too. I went through a year long phase where I was on about six different dating websites (most of them free, by the way). My other single friends, both male and female, were doing it too. But nobody I knew had more success with it than I did. I met about 2 or 3 guys a week for months. I wrote a lot of “I’m sorry, I think we each want different things” emails. It was exhausting. So, one day I just stopped. I realized I didn’t even want a relationship anymore, mostly because I was burnt out. I became very happily single.

And then, of course, three months later I met my husband.

The software forum… sadly enough, I know very well what it’s like to work someplace where a new system is implemented but you - and thousands of other employees – receive little to no training and you’re left to your own devices. That’s all I can say about it.

Giving up carbs to fit into your old clothes – story of my life. But I’ve never been a size 4, like Ashley. I can’t even imagine being that small.

So, I’m sure I’ll put more of my life on display as I write, but I can’t help it. It just happens. When I sit down and start typing, I usually start out in one direction and end up someplace totally different. My characters have a mind of their own. It’s like they actually exist somewhere and I’m just bringing them to life. Or maybe I just did too many drugs…

PS - Besides a penchant for alcohol on occasion, I've been clean for about ten years. I know, most people will say I should stay away from alcohol, too. And maybe they're right. But I can tell you this - my life has changed in the past ten years for the better.
